We honour the Winter Solstice, the shortest and darkest day of the year, but also a day to turn inwards as we stop to reflect on what we’ve harvested through Autumn. How do we want to grow, evolve as Winter and Matariki approach?
The solstice is celebrated differently culture to culture...many modern yoga traditions honour it with 108 rounds of Sun Salutations.
This special practice will be done entirely by candlelight. The evening begins with a light warm up, some intention-setting, followed by 108 rounds of Surya Namaskar (Sun A). Plenty of breaks for rest and reflection included!
This is an all-levels practice of 108 Sun Salutations performed as a group, with plenty of options to modify and rest. Haere mai!

Facilitator
The evening will be led by AWHI co-owner and lead facilitator, Kathleen Kuehn. KK had been doing 108 Sun Salutations to honour the Winter & Summer Solstice on her own for many years before extending the invitation out to the wider Wellington community two years ago. She finds this ritual to be extremely meditative, introspective and grounding, and feels it’s an honour to hold that space for others, as well.
