In the second of our AWHI Continuing Education Workshops series we’re looking at how we can use our yoga practice to increase strength and range of motion so we can move with more freedom and stability in our bodies. Functional fitness nerds, this one’s for you!
Did you know there are ways of building strength into your yoga practice that don’t require an exceptional amount of physical labour, like extra chaturangas, floating through handstand and multiple rounds of crow in a single session?
Incorporating ‘strength at length’ is a way of training a muscle or muscle group while in a stretched or lengthened position. By engaging our muscles in their lengthened state, we convert a passive stretch into an active one, which is far more functional and valuable to the body than passive stretching alone.
This all-levels workshop is for anyone interested in learning simple techniques that will build more strength and stability into your yoga practice...and in a way that won’t leave you feeling puffed or defeated! You’ll learn practical, easy techniques for using end-range strength in your favourite asana, which will help increase mobility, stability, muscle and overall performance whilst reducing risk of injury.
Workshop structure includes:
60-minute yoga practice
Mini-lecture on the three main types of strength/muscle contraction with a focus on ‘strength at length’, or 'end-range strength
Integration: Practical ways to work with end-range strength targeting different anatomical groups (eg, shoulders, hips, core)
