Anatomy: Legs, Hips & Pelvis (Advanced Teacher Training)
Anatomy deep-dive of the lower body: feet, knees, legs, hips, pelvis. Know what you're cueing and why to more fully support the wide range of bodies that show up in your classroom.
This is an advanced teacher training course covering the joints and structure of the lower body -- feet, knees, legs, hips & pelvis -- as they specifically relate to asana practice.
Meets over three consecutive days in-person at AWHI Yoga & Wellbeing studio with a complementary pre-recorded anatomy refresher course!
Day 1 — Feet & Lower Legs
- Whānaungatanga opening circle + course intro
- Foot anatomy
- Tadasana cues and pada bandha
- Asana class (focused on the feet)
- Asana clinic on feet (arches, grounding, straps)
- Practice teaching in pairs (feet cues)
- Lower leg/below-knee anatomy, achilles focus
- Review + Q & A
Day 2 — Knees
- Opening reflections / Q & A
- Knee anatomy deep-dive with palpation
- Asana practice focused on the knee
- Injury management overview (repetitive stress, ethics of responding to student questions, recommending vs. prescribing)
- Asana clinic on common knee injuries and modifications
- Practice teaching (knee cues)
- Review + Q&A
Day 3 — Hips & Pelvis
- Opening circle & reflections; Q & A
- Hip/pelvis anatomy, with hands-on palpation of the hip compartments
- Public asana class focused on hips/pelvis
- The psoas — mechanics and its role as emotional storehouse
- Asana clinic on common hip/pelvic injuries and modifications
- Practice teaching in pairs (hip cues)
- Final wrap-up, review + discussion
The course also includes:
- Six hours of pre-recorded online videos reviewing anatomy basics (available before the course starts) + 2 hour take-home assessment.
- Two hour follow-up online wānanga (date TBD; will be recorded for anyone who can't make it).

Any yoga teacher looking to deepen their knowledge of yoga anatomy and how this knowledge can be used to offer a more diverse range of vinyasa classes, asana variations and safer cueing practices. This course provides a deeper applied understanding of the HOW and WHY of efficient and effective cueing. Who can register
Some prior yoga anatomy training required -- eg, 200 hr CYT; yin training with an anatomy focus, etc. Please get in touch if you'd like to discuss whether your existing qualifications are enoug
